GET THE FACTS: What Is Sex Trafficking?

Picture
Domestic Sex Trafficking (DST) is the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person over the age of 18 for sex in which the victim has sexual intercourse or performs sexual acts in exchange for money.

Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking(DMST) involves all teenagers and children under the age of 18 who are being manipulated or coerced into acts of sexual exploitation.

Under federal law DMST is often referred to as CSEC or Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children. This is a child who has received food, drugs, money or shelter in exchange for sex.

Who is the victim? Any person who engages in commercial sex acts, regardless of the use of force, fraud or coercion, is a victim of human sex trafficking, even if they appear to consent to the commercial sex act.

Who is the Trafficker?

Just as there is no one type of victim, there is no one type of trafficker. Traffickers can be labeled as pimps but are often family members, peers, intimate partners, business owners, or even trusted people in positions of authority.
